Resume Accomplishments A Resume Writers Take on Standing Out

Resume Accomplishments A Resume Writers Take on Standing Out Resume Accomplishments A Resume Writers Take on Standing Out As a resume author, I don't believe it's conceivable to exaggerate the significance of resume achievements all through your pursuit of employment. Achievements are simply the most intense component to separate recorded as a hard copy. Its that straightforward. What's more, theyre additionally exceptionally valuable during prospective employee meetings. Most continues are loaded up with jobs and obligations, and that makes them amazingly normal. What improves achievements is that they explain the incentive for businesses. The attention isnt on what you did. Its what they received in return that truly matters. More cash, less cerebral pains, new thoughts, smoother forms, progressively effective groups… (This is at the foundation of what I call the 3 laws of resume composing.) Achievements (additionally called accomplishments or results) are incredible on the grounds that they talk your perusers language. While I dont accept that theyre the main thing that issues, I think theyre what makes a difference most. Especially considering the way that its the most fragile point on numerous resumes! A few instances of achievements Here's some material I found on genuine resumes. Notice the difference among achievements and jobs/obligations. Attendant resume achievements: Individual from Hospital Improvement group, with a key job in improving patient stream. Profound comprehension of dependence and committed to rewarding it like another malady. My patients trust me and offer significant data that encourages me take care of their clinical needs. Exhibited and clarified emergency clinic disease control convention to numerous gatherings of clinical staff. Medical caretaker jobs and duties: Tallied all opiates/controlled substances toward the start and end of each move. Helped with medical procedure and observed patients in recuperation. Partaken in interdepartmental and multidisciplinary interchanges and joint effort. Given data, enthusiastic help and consolation to patients and family members. Software engineer continue achievements: Improved execution of a web crawler in Java. Stepped up to the plate of porting [redacted] to 64-piece Linux (30k lines of C++ capacities called from Java to for the most part parse and make arrange parcels), which ended up being an extraordinary foreknowledge as, after a year, [redacted] direly expected to move machine clients from 32-piece. Served in Technical Lead job for collaborates to 4 individuals. Software engineer jobs and duties: Performed meets and produced prerequisites investigation documentation. Kept up exclusive server programming utilized for assortment and communicate of different pressure and encryption of over-the-air messages. Created year long task plan for investigation, rollout, and asset assignment. Do you perceive how the accomplishments could truly get the attention of recruiting managers? Value, from their point of view, implies decreasing costs, improving a procedure, overseeing individuals, stepping up to the plate, thus on. This is the thing that resounds and makes you stick out. Furthermore, this is the manner by which you could get you a meeting. Then again, jobs and duties are normal from individuals in this position. Obviously you do that. Its your activity! They seldom have enough weight to make you unmistakable. All in all, would you say you are prepared to fill your resume with achievements? Boosting achievements on your resume Jobs, duties and achievements are the structure squares of your Experience segment. Furthermore, since resumes are filtered rapidly (from the outset), you should introduce a large portion of the data in slug structure. As indicated by your circumstance, you should adjust how you present your profession history. To discover achievements all alone, a rundown of significant inquiries can be very useful. You'll see one in this achievements worksheet. The inquiries search for uncommon things you did, how you dazzled your chief, your commitments to benefit, etc. Yet, note that they're conventional, accordingly numerous inquiries probably won't concern you. In case you're searching for custom fitted material, I've taken a shot at arrangements of achievements, by calling. All things considered, the achievement models I gave above originate from two of my books in the Resume Hacking arrangement. I have a book for medical caretakers and another for word related specialists. A book for software engineers and one for framework heads. Essentially, each book contains an extraordinary, altered rundown of 50+ achievements like the ones above, only for your field. The objective is to refresh your memory and assist you with making slugs that convey additional weight. A large number of your friends don't have achievements driven resumes… There are simply an excessive number of resumes out there with basically no achievements. Its pitiable. As a resume essayist, I see this again and again (and defenselessly feign exacerbation). In any case, for you, it's a potential for success to have out. On the off chance that you put in the energy and exertion to discover and record every one of your achievements, you'll include solid, particular character to your resume. Couple that with great watchword fitting, to deal with ATS filters, and your resume will get substantially more consideration. In the event that you know other occupation searchers who are battling to stick out, let them think about what you've quite recently found by sharing this piece! Interviewing Tips for Five Different Types of Hiring Managers

Meeting Tips for Five Different Types of Hiring Managers Talking Tips for Five Different Types of Hiring Managers Did you land a meeting? Congrats, you're most of the way to the guarantee of a new position! You're equipped with talking tips and feel completely arranged as you stroll in the entryway. In any case, at that point you experience a questioner who totally perplexes you. He's either absolutely ill-equipped (e.g., lost your resume) or he causes you to feel extremely unbalanced (e.g., significant stretches of quietness). Indeed, now and then terrible things happen to great interviewees. Notwithstanding the amount you practice, no one can tell what's in store when you meet the employing administrator. To assist you with remaining in charge, here are talking with tips to acclimate to five sorts of basic questioners: 1. The bumbler. Bumblers have practically no clue about how to direct a compelling prospective employee meeting. They realize they have to enlist somebody, however they haven't gotten around to defining explicit employing measures or asking examining meeting inquiries. They will in general base their impressions of you on factors that have practically nothing to do with the stuff to carry out the responsibility. Guidance: Bumblers are frequently simple to dazzle, however you need to lead them. When managing a bumbler, remain in order of your own story and continue emphasizing your qualities. 2. The chatterbox. Chatterboxes like to talk. Also, talk. Also, talk. They talk about themselves, the organization, their children, their exercise routine, their pets, their side interests … If you're fortunate, they'll get around to the points of interest of the activity. They talk such a great amount, truth be told, thus ceaselessly that in case you're not cautious, you may never get an opportunity to introduce your case. Guidance: Pick your spots to dash all through the questioner's discussion, making short (however self-serving) remarks that play off whatever the chatterbox is prattling about. One of the most disregarded meeting tips is to pose your own inquiries. Offer pointed conversation starters explicit to the activity or organization, and divert the chatterbox back to those subjects if the meandering aimlessly continues. 3. The poker face. Poker-confronted questioners can cause your hair to stand on end. They stay there, sphinx-like, as you talk about yourself and your capabilities. They don't gesture. They don't grin. Nothing appears to fluster or dazzle them. Guidance: When it comes to talking tips for managing this kind of recruiting director, the key is to remain quiet. Abstain from making a decent attempt bring out a reaction. Turning up the warmth or your own excitement isn't probably going to have any kind of effect with genuinely emotionless questioners. You're likely establishing a connection: It's just not enlisting on the questioner's face. 4. The gamesperson. Gamespeople see the prospective employee meet-up as a round of feline and mouse. Their primary objective is discovering approaches to entangle you. Now and then they are inconspicuous and innocuous; different occasions they can be dastardly, such as disregarding you when you stroll in the entryway as a test to perceive how confident you are. Exhortation: If you have a feeling that you're being tried, figure out which response would best serve your own advantages. On the off chance that the questioner is basically impolite, you have to inquire as to whether you need to work for this individual or organization. A standout amongst other talking tips is to stay cool and expert consistently, yet set limits if any circumstance is making you awkward. 5. The late questioner. It's irrational to anticipate that each meeting should begin precisely on schedule. In any case, if the questioner is running 20 or 30 minutes late, and you haven't been given a conciliatory sentiment or clarification, consider rescheduling. This methodology may serve you better on the off chance that you presume the questioner is feeling the squeeze or time imperatives. Exhortation: Be mindful so as to cover whatever restlessness you might be feeling. On the off chance that you propose rescheduling the meeting, pass on that you comprehend that sudden occasions oftentimes occur in business and that you would be glad to return when things are less wild. Associations, for example, IBM use KangoGift to cultivate and participate in the working environment. KangoGift has been designated for some, grants, including Mac, TLCs, Best Mobile Innovation, MITXs Start-up of the Year, and YEI French Innovation Laureate. Todd has a BA degree from Boston College and a MBA from Yale University. Todd, Ill currently turn the online c ourse over to you. Amazing. Much obliged to you, Jim. Much obliged to you, Monster, and thank you everyone for joining today to discuss the best five HR forms directly for the social endeavor. This is a theme that is precious to me. It is something that I think we, as HR experts, can truly begin to consider as we make sense of what is the most ideal approach to make our associations progressively social and to make HR somewhat better and more amicable for the entirety of our representatives. Our plan today is really direct in that I need to cover a couple of zones. The primary thing that I might want to do is thought of a system for what does it truly mean to be a social venture. The word social is regularly abused, on the off chance that you ask me, and I need to ensure that we have a typical comprehension of being a social venture. At that point I will take around five to 10 minutes to share probably the most ebb and flow research around worker conclusion. Sick offer examination on what representatives are generally searching for in their occupations, since I think whats most intriguing is that what workers need and want out of their work is evolving quickly. Social can give a tremendous chance to enhance that for the work power. At that point well invest the main part of our energy delving into the best five procedures generally directly for a social undertaking. Im going to cover a couple of key regions, yet Im going to spend specific consideration on zones around execution the board, representative criticism and instructing, preparing, and furthermore information the executives in the workforce. At that point we will wrap up by seeing some contextual investigations and some normal measurements for achievement in associations. All things considered, and with my experience working with associations for quite a while to make HR all the more convenient and social, Im truly eager to begin us off. To kick everything off, I would like to begin at the most elevated level and talk about something that I allude to as the moment work place. This is the place representatives anticipate that that prompt access should thoughts, individuals, and assets. The vast majority of us would not differ with the idea that the manner in which we work is evolving. The manner in which we work in the working environment is getting progressively moment, yet in addition there is a sense with the end goal that representatives anticipate that things should happen now. I accept the moment work environment gives pleasant chances to us to consider social. Presently one of the enormous open doors around social is that the manner in which representatives treat their own lives and the manner in which workers utilize internet based life individually is beginning to saturate the work environment. Regular topics for my conversation today will be around how would we rearrange our procedures to make them all the more opportune, and how would we plan these HR procedure to be appropriate for the manner in which individuals work today. I need to feature that these progressions are going on, and associations are beginning to consider approaches to make social more predictable with the manners in which representatives work outside of the working environment. Presently, to think of a working thought of being a social endeavor, I will take a gander at it along these lines. To me, a social endeavor is one where workers have the entirety of the assets important to team up and advance the crucial their association. To me, this means our conversation today won't center around innovation and devices. Those are extremely only one significant part of the condition. Today were truly concentrating on the hierarchical mentality that we as HR pioneers need to encourage in our corporate societies to empower representatives to work socially. A ton of what would have been covering inside the following 40 minutes or so is discussing this idea of the moment working environment and how we encourage that outlook. Presently, if an association is social, it unmistakably impacts all parts of HR. Here I simply need to feature at an opportune time in our conversation that social truly influences everything from the manners by which we pull in top abilities to the manners by which we speak to our corporate image as a business of decision to the open doors a few representatives must be a voice of the association and impart remotely through online journals or different assets to the manners by which workers are on-loaded up into associations. A distant memory are the days when our lesser bookkeepers, on their first day, got an organizer from HR which at that point says, Your chief will be by to take you out for lunch soon. The most creative and dynamic social associations assist representatives with jumping on-boarded actually rapidly through exceptional things, for example, video invite messages from officials, acquaintances with their colleagues and colleagues, and having the option to finish the entirety of the standard HR forms that are basic when someone is new to an association. Social is likewise truly affecting the manner by which representatives are drawing in with their jobs and furthermore the ways the L and D, or Learning and Development, associations are taking advantage of the shrewdness of the workforce to prepare and create future pioneers. Presently, since we have a typical understanding and an understanding for us all that the working environment is getting progressively moment and individuals anticipate that things should happen now, Id like to begin with a pleasant little animation that says, We do those entire deceives electronically now. For us all on the line today, as HR individuals, were not really reexamining HR forms. Were simply welcome to consider how might we do this somewhat more astute, do it in more of an organized way, and do it in an all the more opportune way. I present it that way since what the work environment esteems and what the working environment grasps is beginning to change. There are four wide regions of the work environment where the working environment puts high qualities, and Im going to concentrate just on two of them here. The first

E-Learning â€" The Online Folly? E-Learning While we â€" the teachers may be the experts of the topic being taught, students might help us study more concerning the artwork of education. Accepting this will help us sort out a perplexing puzzle with which faculties and universities now battle: online training. For some faculties like my very own, this puzzle very nearly spelled the tip. A quick time ago our college president was expeditiously fired and then just as quickly reinstated. The major argument for her dismissal was her failure to implement a working system of online learning. After all, a number of different colleges have been on the e-studying wagon: Stanford, Harvard, M.I.T., among others. So it seemed as though we were lagging, whereas the competitors thrived. Veritably, it was introduced this week that several more universities (including our personal) had contracted with the company Coursera, who will assist in the development and set-up of online programs. Will online schooling ever really rival the standard of brick-and-mortar colleges, though? Teaching â€" a Two-Way Street This is the place the scholar-instructor relationship hits the highlight. A colleague just lately lamented: “It’s not just about instructing college students, it’s about learning’ ‘em too.” It took me a second to catch on, however past the hillbilly vernacular was a really clear point. Teaching our college students is just as a lot about educating them, as it is about us as academics learning who the scholars are. ‘Facetime’ is the key to successful communication with college students. The summer Shakespeare course which I currently teach is extremely complicated and requires the comprehension of several facets. In order to be successfully discovered I must be able to confirm the potential of my college students to interpret the material. Can they wrap their minds around the complexity of the plots? No? Perhaps it’s time to introduce a nicely-made movie to break them in. Is the linear vernacular too difficult? If so, we should allot the necessary time to cover each speech word for word. A Great Blues Piece Each memorable class can be likened to a fantastic blues piece. You have the basic rhythm, representing the syllabus. The improvised guitar is way the same because the improvisation integral to the category, laying additional shade over the rhythm and beat. Through pragmatic means â€" quizzes and essays, the best of educators would discover methods of maintaining us tuned in. They appeared to have some sort of ‘lecturers only’ ESP, honing in on our mood. A eager sense stored them abreast to changes: once we’d nod-off, when we had been more attentive…to which they’d instantly react. A simple joke would be just like the beacon of a lighthouse on a misty seaside, reaching out to attach with us. Dialogue and Teaching Sizable lecture courses additionally act as a way of epicenter from which intellectual communities are born. Beyond the core classroom, college students will cross paths and interact, finding widespread ground and discover them able to break the ice with those they might otherwise shy away from. It’s at all times nice to listen to a student inform me that they and their pals have vigorous debates regarding the matters covered at school. When this occurs, I feel I’ve accomplished one thing right. I can now fluidly assimilate this data into my instructing strategy for each class, an motion not easily matched by online instructors. Online studying, conversely, lacks this teacher-pupil dynamic. The courses also lack the immensely crucial immediacy of interaction. Emails take time to get from one individual to a different, to not mention the time spent writing. In this fashion, it can't really be thought-about a dialog. The Dynamics of Teaching I recently reviewed a pre-filmed online course from Yale. While the instructor was extremely clever and graciously articulate, the course was doomed to fail. Much like ‘Cheers’ was recorded earlier than a live studio audience, so was this course. It was all very anonymous feeling. The worst part is that one might just as easily have loved a coffee at Barnes and Noble and digested a good guide on the topic â€" and would have taken more away from the expertise. Truly memorable lessons are at all times going to be these with an excellent scholar-instructor dynamic. True studying comes from intellectual group, one thing realized from Socrates. In sensible instances, education comes from the collaboration between teacher and student which also leads to the satisfaction of acquiring new skills or data. As with something mechanized or digitized on this age, the prospect of e-studying appears doomed to be sought by these seeking solitude. It’s actually a really lonely place for lecture rs and students alike. University Isnt The Be All End All - Theres More!

University Isnt The Be All End All - Theres More! You may feel as though its the common norm to go to University, its not. In England, less than half of 18-year-olds go to University, theres no need to feel obliged to go. Some people are glad that they went for the life experience and the degree but there are other ways to gain this level of experience and qualifications. Degree Apprenticeships Although this is pretty similar to going to University, there is a slight twist. Through Degree Apprenticeships you are able to work in the industry whilst gaining a qualification. This is a great way to get your hand in experience whilst learning. Degree apprenticeships are usually in Tech related courses so if you want to end up doing  Tech in the future (why wouldnt you) these are definitely worth considering. Apprenticeships Apprenticeships are great options if youre someone who knows what you want to do or what sector you want to go into. You gain the equivalent to what you do at A levels but you also get to actively try it out rather than just learning about it. With some apprenticeships, you get a job at the end of it, which is extremely beneficial and a lot more secure than some things you study at Uni. Some colleges also provide Higher Apprenticeship courses, enabling you to gain the equivalent of a bachelors degree without the fees. Junior level jobs You may just want to start earning straight away and you know where you want to work and why.  Lots of managers of big brands talk about how they started from the bottom. Its pretty impressive being motivated about starting work as soon as you finish school. You may work for a couple of years as a junior then decide to  do something completely different, you may even move Cities. Either way, going straight into work isnt for everyone but to those that it is, its very impressive. Internships An internship is a good way of trying out your desired career and seeing if its suited to you. Some companies ask their interns to work voluntarily but then you are given the option to progress further and get paid in a permanent role. Some may pay you from the start, it may be a temporary role but this is definitely a good  place to start. You might decide to move away to an internship abroad or in a different city. This is a great way of getting the same sort of experience that you would at University. Gap year There will be lots of you who are unsure about what you want to do. Some of you may take some time out to work anywhere in order to earn some easy cash or you may just want to take a year out of working life and relax. Those of you that like to travel may fulfil your dream of travelling before settling back into education or work. Last  Tip mind the gap, whatever you decide to do. Make sure you dont leave too much of a gap on your CV. Recruiters and employers  sometimes look down on this so its best to avoid them.

Actually, I prefer not to be the unwanted messenger yet it's completely conceivable that what you have on your hands is an awful administrator, and it's about time that you face it, except if you don't give a fig about your profession. These five signs may astound you, yet stop for a second and consider the harm they're causing (think: hindered vocation and absence of headway). While it may be ideal to work under somebody you coexist with, that is a long way from the main thing you should an incentive in this relationship. 1. They Never Offer Critical Feedback There's in every case a lot of commendation. Your director realizes how to state thank you and tells you you're accomplishing acceptable work, yet they don't have the foggiest idea how to give you useful input, which can at last assist you with delivering better work and develop you into a pioneer yourself. What to Do Request input. State, I value hearing what I'm progressing nicely, however I'm continually hoping to improve, thus it'd be helpful to me in the event that you had the option to begin joining basic criticism into our gatherings so I recognize what to concentrate on. 2. They Don't Recognize Your Potential You might approve of the state of affairs going at work. You wouldn't actually say you're drifting you simply realize how to carry out your responsibility truly well. All things considered, you've been doing likewise for as long as more than two years. You've been given more undertakings, and you generally handle them easily. Try not to botch this with development or acknowledged potential. In the event that the facts demonstrate that you've been dealing with similar things since you began (regardless of whether your plan for the day has consistently expanded), you might be trapped in an endless cycle, your psychological muscles decaying. What to Do Articulate your longing to extend your range of abilities and assume on greater liability that goes past just taking on a greater amount of what you as of now do. On the off chance that your solicitation goes unheard and nothing transforms, it may be a great opportunity to search for a new position, one where you can benefit as much as possible from your capacities and ascend through the positions like you merit. 3. They Have No Idea How Hard You're Working Your administrator sees you in the workplace and expect your hours are pretty much like theirs. The truth, be that as it may, is that you're doing a few hours of work every night and a lot progressively throughout the end of the week. Your get-aways are not unplugged. No, you're offering an explanation to customers and placing in an hour of work during your regularly scheduled drive. On the off chance that you crunched the numbers, you'd gauge you're working around 65 hours every week. You like the work, so it's not the most noticeably terrible thing ever, however it's unpleasant and depleting. What to Do Conceding you're feeling exhausted and overpowered isn't fun, however it's vital if, taking everything into account, you're upbeat doing what you're doing, yet you can't continue the pace. Dream author Jennifer Winter offers three choices for suggesting this extreme point. 4. They Play Favorites (and You're the Favorite) It's ideal to be the goody two shoes, right? Who wouldn't like to be valued by the individual responsible for their check? Venture back however and attempt to imagine others' perspective and ask yourself how it would feel to have your administrator favor your colleague and consistently scorn you. Being best mates may feel great at the time, yet it's improper and amateurish, and it isn't showing you a darn thing. What to Do Since you presumably would prefer not to get him out for this conduct, you can attempt to work around it. Acclaim your colleagues' endeavors and routinely bring up the collaboration associated with finishing ventures. This should be called progressed overseeing up. Your objective isn't to get him to begin overlooking you, yet to encompass the entire group 5. They Prioritize the Team Over the Company Your supervisor's very regional and thinks about every single individual in their group like you're all their own youngsters. The work your gathering is liable for is the main need, and, accordingly, they frequently dismiss cross-joint effort openings with different groups or decline to alter their perspective and accomplishing to all the more likely work all in all organization and not only a little piece of it. What to Do Whenever you get wind of a venture that would permit you to work with another division, make some noise before they get an opportunity to pass it onto another person. Tell them you perceive your needs inside the group yet that you're likewise very intrigued by this new activity and figure it would at last advantage the organization on the off chance that you had the option to invest energy in things that address the association's general strategic. Fortunately the greater part of these circumstances can be settled with a forthcoming discussion. Considering the nightmarish work circumstances out there, these aren't so terrible. In any case, you would prefer not to be beguiled by apparently innocuous things that could contrarily affect your profession. Also, the sooner you make a move, the sooner you can excel.

Job hunting with a conviction on your record

Occupation chasing with a conviction on your record I as of late had a customer call to have his resume done, and over the span of our conversation, out popped an admission that he had two crimes. They were five years of age, yet at the same time, not great. He has confronted numerous hindrances during the pursuit of employment, despite the fact that his crimes had nothing to do with a vocation or anything business related. Regardless of whether you have a conviction, or have spent time in jail, you despite everything need cash to endure. Normally, this implies you need an occupation of some sort. In any case, in the event that you have attempted to get a new line of work with a conviction on your record, you will have seen that its exceptionally difficult to get managers to acknowledge that youll be an incredible individual from the group when youve violated the law. Here are a couple of tips to kick you off the correct way. In the first place, take a stab at counseling lawful guide about getting your record canceled or fixed. This isnt accessible for each case, however merits investigating. When a record is canceled, it cannot be opened once more, and the issue is viewed as settled. You should accept whatever position you can to start revamping your validity. Its conceivable that youll need to acknowledge work beneath your past way of life â€" in any event, working in cheap food or administration businesses. Indeed, even little employments like this can help lead you to greater things later. You can check whether any of your own contacts are searching for individuals. Indeed, even with a record, its significantly more likely you can find a new line of work through systems administration and companions than you will through answering to work promotions. There might be network programs that can help you in discovering business. These are for the most part in urban communities and not frequently accessible in country zones, and may have different specifications connected to them. In any case, businesses that consent to work with these projects wont be shocked about your record. Likewise, these workplaces have various assets, and might have the option to assist you with learning new abilities. Little and nearby organizations are frequently preferable wagers over gigantic partnerships, for the straightforward reality that they come up short on the lawful layers of administration that are intended to shield an organization from any risk at all. Another road for you to consider is independent work. Aptitudes, for example, development, plumbing, or auto fix a record wont become possibly the most important factor by any means. On the off chance that you have an enterprising streak, you ought to think about these chances. Despite what you do, its improbable that work is simply going to fall into your lap. Dont get disheartened, and realize that there is work out there for you some place. It will likely take you longer to discover, however dont harbor bogus expectation. Dismissal happens even to candidates who have shimmering records and occupation chronicles. Dont be reluctant to look for enthusiastic help from companions or family. When you do find a vocation, make certain to demonstrate to the business that you are a decent recruit. Itll make landing the following position simpler once you have a built up work history. Work the additional hours, keep the guidelines, and take additional obligations at whatever point you can. A conviction in addition to a string of short, rough occupations is a gigantic warning to potential businesses, and will shoot you down from practically any employment. Dont be a difficult representative, and brave it. Most record verifications just return seven years, and afterward from that point onward, you will be free.

From Snowboards to Baby Products

From Snowboards to Baby Products Success Story > From: Job To: Startup From Snowboards to Baby Products “I didn't want to work for anyone else anymore. Also, I calculated the number of hours a year that I was spending commuting. It was insane!” * From Snowboards to Baby Products Here's howMark Harrieslaunched out on his own, reclaimed his family time, and learned some tough lessons along the way. What work were you doing previously? I worked for a winter sports retailer buying snowboard equipment. What are you doing now? I run a business from home selling baby products online. Why did you change? I was bored and wasn't growing. Also, I didn't want to work for anyone else anymore. We'd just had a baby. For me, seeing my son briefly before and after work wasn't good enough. I wanted to watch himgrow up. I was really feeling the need to step off the hamster wheel and create something for myself that would a) allow me to work from anywhere and b) see my son more. Also, I calculated the number of hours a year that I was spending commuting. It was insane! When was the moment you decided to make the change? Probably around the time my son was born. Are you happy with the change? Absolutely. I get to choose when to work and for how long. This means of course I have to be a firm but fair boss to myself, which isn't always easy. What do you miss and what don't you miss? I miss snowboarding. The old job afforded me the luxury of calling this work, which I was extremely grateful for as it's a real passion. I also miss the community feel of that industry and the relationships. And I miss the travel: the opportunity to learn about the world through the vehicle of snowboarding. I do NOT miss sitting at a desk for long hours, endless meetings, the two-and-a-half-hour commute, having to make large presentations (I'm an introvert), or the endless spreadsheets. How did you go about making the shift? I took the maximum paternity leave allowed to get to know my son. It gave me some time to re-evaluate where I was in life, and where I wanted to be. I also knew that when I went back to my desk after two months off I would feel awful to be back there. So I sort of forced my own hand. Within days of being back I handed in my notice. I just couldn't take any more! Knowing I had a certain amount of days left there I was able to think ahead to what was next and start planning the next move. What didn't go well? What 'wrong turns' did you take? Plenty. I took a part-time job locally to pay the bills while I was without a main source of income, but it dried up. This left me in a tight spot financially. I should have started the business and quit when the earnings had matched or exceeded my job wage. Looking back now I'm glad I learned that lesson, but man it was tough going for a while. How did you handle your finances to make your change possible? I started to examine all of my outgoings and cut things right back. This was a great exercise for me as I was horrified at some of my expenses. As a result I'm much more of a minimalist now and the headspace alone from having less crap and less to manage is worth it for me. I appreciate what I have. What was the most difficult thing about changing? As I mentioned earlier, being a boss to myself. And learning to run a business, which is of course a work in progress. Switching off can also be difficult. Because it's my own business I tend to carry the work into the evenings, which I'm working on! What help did you get? I took a course in sourcing, selecting and selling products online. And I formed a mini mastermind group with other online sellers. We get together and work on each other's businesses. This is like gold to me! What resources would you recommend to others? I'd recommend Tim Ferriss's4-Hour Work Week. It changed the way I think and really inspired me to do something for myself. What have you learnt in the process? That I'm horrible with numbers despite my background in retail buying. And that it's impossible to do it all by yourself. I need accountability too. What would you advise others to do in the same situation? Get your business or idea up and running before you press eject on your job! Hone in on your strengths and base your work around this. Get help or outsource the parts you really don't enjoy when possible. Don't do it alone. Build a network around you of like-minded people. Get an accountability partner. Overall, spend all the time you need getting clear on what you really want. To find out more about Mark's business, visit www.mushymushy.co.uk. Financial Tips For Women In Business

Financial Tips For Women In Business Women are a critical part of today’s business community.   The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor found that women have gained a bit of ground as entrepreneurs, growing by a respectable seven percent in the past five years. Studies show that companies with women at their head tend to survive longer in the market and make a lasting positive impression on the surrounding community. When it comes to women and finances, it is important to note that often money becomes a very emotionally charged subject.     Money represents many different things to different people.   Sometimes it represents power or control, and sometimes money can represent more complicated concepts like love and security.   Either way, it is most important to understand what women can do to affect their financial future positively and succeed in the world of business.  Manage finances personally  Do not be a woman who lets her partner manage her finances.   Take personal responsibility for budgeting and managing “personal” finances.   It is one thing to work together with a partner, but do not allow a relationship to dictate the distribution of funds with absolution. Women who allow their spouses or partners to manage their money tend to end up feeling unsatisfied with the result.   It is just better to personally handle financial situations.  Get a grip on outstanding debts  Make sure to keep a watchful eye on credit ratings and outstanding debts.   If the past was not such a great time financially, just keep it in the past and push forward.  Pay at least the minimum payment on any overdue credit cards. If necessary, research credit card consolidation options and turn five payments per month into one easy and more manageable payment.   Paying down debts is critical to future financial success.    Seek out and befriend other women in business  Seek out and befriend other successful women in business.   Women should stick together and lift one another up whenever possible.   Find a role model/mentor and soak in the knowledge that person exudes.   When women surround themselves with other successful, intelligent, and powerful women, they almost always find their own successful, happy endings.  Always cover all legal bases  Always cover all legal bases when it comes to managing finances.   If there is to be a wedding, then there needs to be a prenuptial agreement.   It may be a bit challenging for a partner to accept, but people are unpredictable. A woman must protect herself in every way possible.   It is never good for anyone to build his or her existence (financial or not) around their partner.   Independence is okay.   Never forget that.    Save whatever, whenever possible.  It may not always be feasible, but save whatever, whenever possible.   Toss even a few dollars into a savings account each week, and forget the account exists.   Eventually, there will be quite a comfy financial cushion built up for a rainy day.  .
